Vermont (cont'd)

Bright blossoms

Rise from dewy grass,

Taut petals strain to contain

The buoyant gas

Lifting us high

Above the waking town:

Over tiny white houses,

Over the dark mirror river,

Across the covered bridge.

A Vermont cow

Grazes the cloud fields

Filling frosty udders:

Chunky Monkey

Or Cherry Garcia?

Drop for a moment

To the gorge's green shadows:

Murmurous devotions

Of the stream

Through silent choirs

Of pine.

Then aloft into sunlight

Above the wooded land

Over the black pond afloat with lilies

Among green hills.
