My balloons seemed to glow in the sunlight as I rose out of the shadows of the trees. |

For a while I flew alongside Ron Cassidy, whose
balloon features the purple lilac, the state flower of New Hampshire. |

The other balloons were staying low, trying not to travel too far too fast. There was a temporary flight restriction about eight miles to the east, because the President was visiting somewhere in Maine. I leveled out fairly low, too, but enough higher than everyone else that I pulled out ahead the pack. At first there were a fair number of open areas visible among the trees. I passed over a cemetery (the ones who didn't manage to live free, I supposed) and followed the main highway out of Pittsfield. |

Flying on, I glimpsed a neighboring town in amongst the trees and wisps of fog.
